I'm sure it's time for summer, with the solstice fast approaching.
Any ideas on this bird walking through a Cornish seaside car park?
At first I thought young blackbird, but I don't think that's right ...

Can you help me identify these three? They first three were taken in NW Washington state; the second and third shots are two different angles of the same bird. The last bird was taken in MT.

    Thanks!
sorry it took so long. was on vacation and missed this reply....

1st looks vesper sparrow, 2nd and 3rd look song sparrow and last is too hard to ID positively. Looks like a very young bird , maybe a fledgling white throat?

    Re: SPRING 2011 Bird ID

    Hi Paul--

I'd originally thought they might be Siskins. The plumage was different from the ones we see here in the winter, but I thought that might be the difference between breeding and non-breeding plumage.

The main thing that makes me think it's not a pine siskin is the beak difference. The ones I've seen have a fairly pointed beak.

Pine Siskin from the Botanic Gardens in Chicago (more narrow, pointed beak):

Another shot of these guys from Yellowstone (blunter, wider beak, or at least it appears so from this angle)

I'm still at a loss. I went through every sparrow in allaboutbirds.com's guide and nothing seems to fit. There was about 4 of them bouncing around a fallen pine tree with a pair of crossbills.

Looks finch to me, but very sparrow like....... no clue and that's rare for US birds having seen nearly 360 species :mad2:

The closest two finches are the purple and cassin's females. But the face pattern doesn't seem to match either.
