    They do look like house sparrows, but the male has a red-brown head instead of a grey head? Color variation or just non-breeding plumage?

    Yes, if Europe would like their house sparrows back, tell them to feel free to set a few traps and take forty or fifty of the five zillion living in my hedge.

    oops Willow sparrow which is closely related to house sparrow.

    ran into this bird today while out in my kayak. I saw them a couple of times but every time I tried to get closer they started chasing each other around.

    Hmmm... did you see their fronts at any point? Wondering about the breast color.

    looks to be a western race of the house wren. Do you have other images to rule out rock wren for sure(only other wren in that area that looks somewhat similiar)

    Thanks Terry. It was a great trip and the hummers were just everywhere and not people shy. I got shots of some from 5' away.
