Something I never thought I would do...

Last week, I broke down and did something I never thought I would do. I ordered a lens made for the APS-C sized sensor. I bought the Tokina AT-X Pro DX 12-24mm f/4 lens. I just got it yesterday, and took it out for a test drive today after work. It's nice to have a true wide angle lens. Here are some shots from my walk this afternoon. All taken at 12mm.

Gasp! Michael, I'll never be able to look at you the same way again

Although I agree with your decision for ultra-wide angle. Drastic conditions (APS-C) require drastic measures (APS-C format lenses). I think the APS-C is here to stay.

    Great pixs by the way!

Thanks Loupey. I always thought I would end up getting a FF digital camera, so I didn't give the APS-C format lenses much of a thought. Then when the 5D came out, I took a good long look at it, and a good long look at what I like to shoot, and realized that the APS-C sensor is a better fit for me. At least for now.

Yeah, when the 5D came out, I figured it was the perfect fit for me. 1.6x, 1.3x 1.0x - I wish Canon would standardize on one going forward. Would be nice to strap on a 24mm and know you're getting 24mm angle of view regardless of what camera it's strapped onto.

When I bought the 30D in December, I made up my mind that if and when I needed true ultra-wide, I'd buy the same exact lens that you did. It made more sense to me than buying the 5D and using my existing 17-40mm when I do so much telephoto/macro work.

You ever notice how you get much bluer skies with a wide-angle? Maybe it is because the sky takes up much more of the metered area, but whatever it is it works.

In Nikon land, we don't get a choice on DSLR sensor - at least not yet - and the natives are perpetually restless waiting for full frame. Me, I prefer the crop factor that makes my 500mm a 750mm...
