nice, i like the gabby as well. not sure what the 2nd one is at all. is the last a green mamba?

i also cannot wait to own my own snakes. although i don't want a venomous one, just a Boa constrictor.

    Re: Some Snakes

I'll take a crack at it

    eastern diamondback
    puff adder
    copperhead
    eyelash viper
    albino western diamondback
    west african gaboon viper
    green mamba

Dylan, A ball python is a great contrictor to start with, they don't need tons of room and are quite docile usually.

    Re: Some Snakes

my guess makes the white snake a crotalus unicolor, and the green snake is actually dendroaspis jamesoni. Nice portraits. Snakes are my favorite animals too.

    Re: Some Snakes

We had a albino corn snake when I was a kid. If I ever get a snake again, probably go for another corn snake or a king snake. I'll avoid the ones with fangs though! I love the texture of the scales on the last one

    Re: Some Snakes

    Wow, thanks guys!

I've been house sitting for a friend for the last few days. Here is what I know. Bottom to top.

The green one is a green mamba, according to the plaque at the zoo. Western gaboon viper, Crotalus durissus unicolor, Eyelash Viper, Eastern copperhead, not a puff adder; they don't have one at my zoo, some kinda rattler as I recall, Eastern diamondback

Erik, you are awesome! I never knew Aruba even had a rattlesnake, let alone what they look like. I thought it looked odd for an amelanistic western

    Re: Some Snakes

Aruba rattlers are an interesting lot - they are critically endangered in the wild but overpopulated in zoos. There are no fewer than six mambas that are correctly called "green mamba..."

The second snake is definitely acanthophis, the death adder. I'm not familiar enough with the genus to nail which death adder it is but it is most likely the nominal form (acanthophis praelongus)

I won't argue the adder ID, because I am not sure what it is, but I am fairly sure there are no adders at my zoo. I will check back on that next time I go there. As for the mambas, I will have to check the species name on those too.

Hots are not my speciality, I am constrictor guy...

    ***************EDIT****************

I went to the Jacksonville Zoo website and found a species list of the animals at the zoo. According to that site there is a puff adder, so I was wrong about that. As for the mamba, the site lists is as a West African Green Mamba, which googles to Dendroaspis viridis. Unfortunately these two are not linked to their own pages.

Dang, 1 for 3...Do you think I could use those numbers to talk my bride into herping trips to Australia and Africa? Me neither.

On the other hand, my first guess was puff adder and that mamba looked a little more like viridis to me yesterday :blush2:

    Don't sweat it...

You should try ID'ing Cynotilapia sub species (African Cichlids). That will make your head spin...:mad2:

First of all...great shots of the creepy crawlies, Almo...as a kid, I used to catch snakes, now...I shy away from them!!! But still am amazed by them.

Anyway, Paul, something I learned a while back, due to curiousity about the timber rattlers here in Wisconsin, I found out that rattlesnakes are found on every continent in the world except the antarctic. Now, I don't know if that meant in every "country", but it amazed me to know that rattlesnakes could even survive in a cold country like this. And I found out that they are rampant around here.

Just a little trivia and I hope I stated it correctly!

I bred African Cichlids for several years, and shipped them all over the US. Had offeres to ship them over seas, but I found it to be too cost prohibitive as I did not have a bulk business. I bred mostlt F1s and according to my customers, they were top quality. Got out of it last year though.

When I lived in Michigan I kept, and attempted to breed Leos and Ball Pythons, but I was never successful, due to lack of time and no experience. I did manage to get eggs from the Leos, but they were always infertile.

    Re: Some Snakes

I suggest you hit the national reptile breeders convention in Daytona FL in august. It is the largest reptile show in the country and is the largest it has ever been this year.

See you there John and I have a table You will be floored by all the non venomous reptiles of every kind, color, genetic cross, rarity...... easily 250,000 reptiles under one roof.

Bring that camera and snap away!!!!!

The only cichlid I know is tilapia

And ken, you mean that SNAKES are found on every continent except Antarctica - not rattlesnakes. Rattlesnakes are only a new world species found in North and South America only (and Central, duh).

    Paul,

Odatria monitors are awesome. I kept and bred a bunch of different species over the years, including scalaris, timorensis, storri and acanthurus...all cool critters. For a while I thought i would get out of everything else just to keep more. I'm currently (and always) looking for storri, so if you know someone who has them, I'm all ears
