    Some older shots of critters...

Here are some pics from a while back long before I knew about this site. Actually some of these pics go back about 5 years. Sorry, they're not the best of quality.

This picture was taken about 3 or 4 yrs ago on the Santa Cruz Warf from our dinner table in Riva Cafe.

This picture was taken at Morro Bay in December 2002

This baby snake was at Mt. Diablo State park about 4 or 5 yrs ago.

This deer was at the edge out Mt. Hamilton Rd about 5yrs ago.

This picture was taken at The Monterey Bay Sea Aquarium at least 3 yrs back.

This picture and the next were taken within the last year with my 1st digital camera (Canon Powershot A20)

This picture was taken last week at The Oakland Zoo with my Nikon D50 and Quantaray 70-300 f4/5.6 supermacro el cheapo lens.

    Nice pix's, Dave!

I love, love, love the first one - you've captured a great story there! I played around with it on my end, if you care to see it, I can post it here with your permission.

    thanks for posting!

that baby snake has legs :-) thus i suspect it is actually a lizard and not a snake at all!

that first one is pretty awesome, just seems to lack some detail in the feathers.

and i like the snail concept but its blown out obviously.

Certainly, I'd love to see what the results are. I appreciate you asking permission. One of my goals for 2007 is to get a photo editing program and learning how to use it. Thanks for the comments. My little Canon A20 has a very reliable camera and has been to quite a few different places. Too bad it's only 2.1mp. My new phone has a 3.2mp camera. It's just crazy how technology advances.

You have a very good eye I feel like a dummy going on all this time thinking it was a snake :blush2:

I hope to have many many more pictures to share. A couple of months back we lost a 160 Gig HD with at least 10,000 pictures on it from my D50 during the last 6 months alone. Most weren't backed up yet. There were tens of thousands of other pictures from a couple of other of cameras as well. A friend who has a small business has volunteered to look at it for us to see if simply swaping the power supply will save it. If that doesn't work we will have to use a data recovery service which cost lots of money

Re: Some older shots of critters...

So here's my take on your image:

The story here is between the fishing boat and the fishing bird (I give up trying to ID birds ) IMO. But first, I take out the horizontal perspective - due to the shot not pointed perpendicular to the railing - to make the railing and horizon parallel and not diverging. Although, now thinking back, diverging lines here may work as well - to the point of being really diverging.

Then, slight color shift, contrast tweak, then the crop to eliminate the lighthouse and trees which really competes for attention.

I probably should have put the post dead center. But you get the picture. I hope

    Fun picture!

Good job on the editing. I remember when I took the shot while waiting for our dinner (Prawns & Chips) I didn't even pay attention to anything beyond the main subject.
