    Some more Crawly Critters.

Grabbed an hour today when the wind seemed to have dropped only for it to start raining, but i just about managed to grab these close ups of more little beasties.

Just a couple more of the Blue Holly Butterfly, and the last image of a small moth of which i have no idea of its ID.

All taken with 50mm and 36mm tube.

    Re: Some more Crawly Critters.

    Nice Blue.
Without the underwing shot it's hard to tell, but I think it's a male Adonis blue and not a Holly blue. Holly blue doesn't have the spots on the hindwings, and it doesn't fly until June. Admittedly the seasons are a bit messed up, but the Adonis flys in May. and does have the spots on the hindwings.

    What's the foodplant in #4?
Gregious caterpillars looking rather like vnessids, but not on nettle or thstle, strange !
I would have collected them, kept them in a tank with fresh foodstuff, and then watched what they turned into...it can be a pain feeding the kids, but it is fun, instructional, and gets great shots of fresh, bright coloured specimens.

The only problem was when tortoiseshells escaped, they get wanderlust just before pupation, and so we had butterflies emerging all round the house - not just in the cardboard box they were meant to be in.
But it was fun for our son !

My mother used to do it every year for her class, they loved it.
She ended up constantly being brought caterpillars, along with whatever they were on (it's their food) unless they were on concrete Then she just got the caterpillar and a very puzzled child ...

    1) Holly blue
    6) Adonis blue

Whatever it is, it's a male.

Thanks Smartwombat for all the information i looked it up in my butterfly book but i am going to have to have another looksie on this, but i went on the fact that they always seem to be around the holly and ivy bush at the back of the garden and this is what they like, also in my book the Adonis is a bright rich blue, where this one is a light blue on outer wings, richer on inner wing, iv attached another view of it.

    Knight i used the 50mm 1.8

I think I know someone who is hooked on macro photography

Great fun and the subjects are plentiful!

Love the fly, dead ladybug, and head-on shot of the butterfly.

Roger - Thanks and yes thats my quest this wekend to get a good insect book!
Loupey - Although Avian photography is my main love, this macro photography certainly is addictive and once i only carried my telephoto out with me now its tubes, 50mm lense and my 20D with the built in flash! i love it, and the more different subjects and plants you can find on an outing makes it great fun!

My book says the Adonis is a light silvery blue, but those underwings clinch it.
    Definitely Holly Blue underwings.
So my book is missing the hindwing spots !
