Nice shot. I never get good shots of wild snakes. Racers are kinda bold, though, and tend to stand their ground with their heads up like that more than any othr snake I've seen in the wild.

I used my 70-300mm at 300mm. I was about 5 feet from the snake at the time.

Racers are acutally very docile and will run at the first hint of trouble, unless they are cold or over heated, in a shed cycle, or have just fed. All snakes react more defencivly when any of these condistions are in place. This guy was probably cold, and he appeard to be in the very begining of a shed. Otherwise he would have been off like a shot. He was actually pursuing a female who was about 3 feet up a tree a few yards away. I have some pics of her too. I just need to get them processed. Next time I will have a snake hook with me and i will get some handeling shots of the snakes.

Towards the end of the shed the eyes milk over. notice the oily looking sheen on the racer, that looks like a beginning of a shed to me, but Almo was there

Hey I am a big slow dude. I need the hook for the extra reach.

As for the eyes, they were slightly milky, but on film that doesn't always come off right, so I us PS to fix up the eye a bit.
