Sigma Bigma - Now With OS!

I don't know how closely you nature guys follow my articles or gear announcements. But I'm sure some of you will be interested in the newest version of the Sigma "BIgma" 50-500mm zoom. It now has Sigma's OS Optical Stabilization system, making it a much, much more versatile lens. I got to see it at PMA, last week. Check out our video of all five new Sigma lenses, including the image-stabilized Bigma.

I´m not on to big "zooms" but that 8-16mm sounds very appealing.

BTW great work John with the PMA coverage

I want that black canon in the back! I guess it's the new color for the green monster?

Oh man... People on Amazon have way too much time. The reviews and user photo's are quite funny. http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-200-500m...cmu_pg__header

    Hi John thanks.
I thought I had read thru all your articles/videos on PMA.
I must have missed this one.
Very good info on the Bigma. I look forward to trying one locally when they come out.

Not even close. I collected a ton of material at the show and only now am I really starting to chip away at producing all the videos, photos and articles. So keep your eyes on that right-hand column because there's lots more to come.

Re: Sigma Bigma - Now With OS!

My local (ish) pro store mentioned the IS Bigma, but didn't have one for me to try.
So I put he non-IS version on the Panasonic 4/3 to mft adapter onto my E-P1.
1000mm handheld indoors in shop lighting is insane!
But unfortunately even in sunlight it won't AF.

That had to look funny. You could make a handle for the lens with duct tape and then just gently hold the camera in your hand

The lens comes with a handle, even with handgrip, where I think you're meant to carry it upside down by hand. Same as on the 80-400..

Just a note-- this lens is now available for rental at Lensrentals.com. I may just have to rent it. Probably not going to have the $1500 to buy it any time soon.

Over renting one? Or why the 50-500 OS over the 150-500 OS?

I look forward to your report if you decide to rent one. I would love something in the 500mm range. Getting a review from a real photographer who shoots what I like to shoot and with no ties to the manufacturer would be great.

I don't know enough about the 150-500 (I do believe that the aperture matches the 50-500's in the same range). But off the top of my head, the main reason would be that extra 100mm of range.

I'm not sure if I fit into the "real photographer" part, but I'd be glad to give you my opinion. Think I'm going to do a two week rental. That way I'll know if I want to bring it with in July to Colorado

I guess that 100 mm would be nice but I only shoot birds and such. I wish I had 100 on the other end of mine! I do love my bigma, for the price you just cant beat it!

Two week rental with insurance and shipping was $220. I should get it about mid-week
