    Nice ones, Roger.

So how do you like your 100-400 so far? Any tips/suggestions for anyone considering this lens?

    Re: Sea Gulls

Thanks Loupey - not had a huge amount of time to practise thanks to work - not even hit 2000 images since I bought it.

Practise and lots of it is the secret and experimentation. There are too many settings to play with but now getting used to them. What I found that mode 2 is no good for birds as they weave around the sky too much but great for something panning across you, e.g. cars.

I have started using manual mode but the 5D's AF is so fast I have gone back to auto AF and its tracking is world shatteringly good.

So for birds IS mode 1, AF auto with the 5D on Servo and ISO normally at ISO 400 with the 5D at F8 - F22 either in AV or full manual with speed pre selected at 1/500th or higher. Centre spot in the viewfinder locked and tracked over the eye of the bird when shooting.

I love this kit - bet you never guessed

    Thanks for the feedback.

I too have not yet found a good use for Mode 2 in nature. Curious - on your 5D, with the AF in Servo Mode, is only the center sensor active?

The 5D's CMOS sensor is supposed to handle whites better. From your 2nd shot, that appears to be the case. I sure wish I had that W-I-D-E full frame viewfinder of yours

I select the centre AF rather than let the camera choose an AF point when taking photo's.

Nice shots Roger and the exposure looks spot on, giving great whites.

My 100-400L rarely comes off now, it took a while to get used to the push/pull zoom, but now its like second nature, interesting Roger what you say about the 1 & 2 modes, iv always used mode 2, centre focus, Al servo, im going to give working with mode 1 only and see what results i get. Thanks.

    Bev,

I took your advice when I first got the kit but could never get seagulls sharp they always seemed to have either vertical or horizontal movement in them. Crows/pigeons which tend to fly straighter lines I got some success with.

I thought it was my lens to start with so read the manual and suddenly the flight of the seagull was the problem - they dart everywhere trying to spot fish in the water - they fly straight for about a second then dart off in another direction - switched to mode 1 and started getting some success. Thanks for the tip on centre AF selection - works wonders.
