    Rodent Island

I returned back to the frozen lake as i know there is other life form there besides the mallards! and today i was rewarded. The water rats (brown rat) were having a fun time trying to get from A to B on the Ice.

    Awesome captures Bev!!!

    What gear did you use?

Also, what was the range here? It looks likes it's really close. Are they used to having people around?

    Very nice rat pictures !
Well done on capruting such a fast and elusive subject.

    OK here's a project - Rat olympians.
This one I think is the speed skater

I missed the high jumper completely, he was far too fast.
Dashed across the path, leapt and all I was left with was a shaking bush where he landed.

Hi, the equipment i use is a Canon 20D with 70-200L f2.8 IS USM, (handheld) i sit on the bank of the lake, and the island where the rats habitat is approx 20 feet away, they are very shy, although the area is used by dog walkers etc, i have to wait a while before they come out feeding, i have had one swim over onto the bank where i am sitting, i had to hold my breath! but a slight movement and they are off. I like it this way though, as it makes the photographing them much more exciting and natural.I have attached pictures that i took when i went back again (they are very addictive) I promise i wont post anymore rats!! Thanks for your kind comments. regards Bev. www.k9imageworld.com www.bevbarker photos.com

    Re: Rodent Island

Of the original set of images, I like the first one. It reminds me of thoroughbred horse racing where all the feet are off the ground (at the same time) except one.

#2 is great technically. Although I tend to profess a bit about the "simplier" older days of manual everything, I cannot imagine getting such a shot in those days.

From one nature nut to another, I'm glad to see the 70-200 2.8IS used other than for sports;)
