Here is a quick edit from my latest outing.

Red phase screech owl... Full frame at 400mm on a 1D too !!

I really can't post the good ones, since it's a paid job and I don't want to loose the in ;)

This is actually one that isn't going to the client. I have images of it looking every which way and a few that are really sharp. This file is a bit soft believe it or not ;)

The whites aren't blown in the original JPEG, but my quick white point adjustment blew an area.

I honestly have only printed ONE file ever, but plan to make a few of this owl ;)

Very nice pic Paul! I love seeing owls. I think it's because I see so few of them that it's always a treat when I find one.

Thanks for the comments in the other thread too everyone. I always have trouble with cardinals wanting to sit still long enuf to get a photo. This feeder is out in the country along a county road on someones private recreational land. I sat in my truck for a good 15 minutes before they came back once I pulled up. Later on I was driving around and had about a dozen or so fly in front of me. I'll be going back to that spot to sit for a while one of these days.

    Nice Job Paul,

I would love to see one of these guys in real life. So far I have had a difficult time getting a decent shot of an Eastern screech owl of any color. So far my best effort was this one that is in Brent Ortego's hand just after being banded.

    Cool shot!

We seem to have more red ones than grey, but I have seen plenty of both. Nocturnal calling works great and to be honest cadance is more important than actually sounding exactly like one ;)

We found over 40 screech on the CBC and this one relocated due to the lowland river flooding recently. It is actually 20 feet from a building.

Once you locate a roost they are a bit easy to get, but FINDING the roost/ nest/ hole is the hard part with owls. I am lucky enough to know were 3 are year round in my town, but I don't bother them for fear of the wrong person seeing me and alerting the mass onslaught of binos and cameras ;)

    Close up anyone ??

The only 2 sparrows that come to mind are savannah and vesper. Since the eye ring looks too narrow and no pink beak... savannah is my call. Sparrows are not my strongest subject though.

    Paul,

This was indeed a tough one because you can’t really see much of the tail and the head is sort of turned in an odd direction (at least to see the field marks). You nailed it down to the two most likely suspects but this one was actually a vesper. I had the advantage of seeing it fly and the white outer tail feathers. The two species are pretty tough to tell apart without getting a good look.

and size does matter usually when I see a vesper the eye ring jumps out at me and indeed the outer tail feathers give it away too.

Nice flamingos, but one tip I can give you is..

wildlife looks better facing you to some degree...usually

As for what lens I use..

I use the original 1D with a 100-400IS and sometimes use a 1.4 canon TC with it. The 300f4 is a very good lens, especially with a tube for close ups or a TC for tele work on a small sensor DSLR(d30, d60, 10D, 20D, Dreb, XT).

Another ID, this one probably not so challenging.

By the way, I agree that the 100-400 IS is an outstanding lens (one of my all time favorites).

This guy landed maybe 30 feet from me on a hiking trail. Full frame cropped vertically.

Looks like an American Kestral to me. One of my photo goals for this year is to get a print worthy shot of one of these little birds of prey.

If this isn't a white breasted nuthatch , I will need a side view to tell you what leucistic warbler type you have ;)

I want to say transitional plumage red knots, but I HATE coastal birding for peeps! When the shore birds are here, I am 100 miles inland hunting golden winged warblers, kentucky warblers, mourning warbler, wilson's warblers........... goshawks(yet to find a nest) and BEARS ;)

Well, you are correct about the leucistic warbler. It was a Nashville but I agree you can’t really tell that from looking at this picture. When I asked the local birdwatchers about this white-breasted nuthatch was the most frequent response.

I agree with you about the red knots also.

    Re: Bird ID Pt. IV

SWEET! A leucistic nashville huh? I have seen a few yellows with small white patches, a crow that looked like a jackdaw, a 1/2 white robin, a very light cream colored merlin and TV(very cool!) and even a darkeyed junco that was leucistic. I would trade any two to see your bird up close!!!

My closest 2 might be the mourning X common yellowthroat I took bad images of(only the second EVER discribed) and the magnolia X parula(originally thought to be a sutton's warbler which is parulaXyellowthroated warbler) I never could get an image of, but got plenty of looks at.

    Re: Bird ID Pt. IV

Here is one of the two birds that was hanging out in the parking lot of my apartment complex. This bird wouldn't move for anything! Cars would go right next to it, and the bird would just look at it and stand still. My guess is its a Canadian Goose, but I'm not too sure on that. So I'm postin here to get a Bird ID.

    Flockin' Turkeys

I was up at 5:30 this morning just messing around the house due the the weather being so crappy this weekend. It's been in the mid to upper 30's and raining all weekend... been a strange January, weather wise. Anyway, I was going stir grazy from being in the house all weekend so I jumped in the truck around noon and went for a ride. Four hours and a grand total of 18 shots later, this is about all I got. It was nice to be out of the house tho. I did see a few RT Hawks, and Coopers Hawk (I think), and a kestral having lunch on a power line and a few other birds, but that was about it for wildlife...
