    Scott, looking through my Butterflies of Alberta book, the one on the boardwalk looks like it might be a Milbert's Tortoise Shell, also known as a Fire-rim Tortoise Shell. According to the book, adults emerge in August and overwinter, surviving until the following June when the next generation starts to develop. They are found in open places and woodlands as well. Wingspan is about 45 to 50 mm (approx. 1.5 to 2 inches). HTH.
