Out in the heat...

spent three hours getting sunburned yesterday, the temperature was about 95f with full sun and even the insects wouldn't sit still unless they were in full shade. I've waded through about half of the 150 or so shots that i took, and here are a couple of early standouts.

p.s. I could swear that i posted this last night before bed, but now i can't find it...I must be losing it.

Yeah, its hot enough isn't it? Its been around 100f the past few days here in PA, not that pleasant for standing outside taking pics. But I'll still take this over cold weather.

BTW... I read a thermometer today in the shade... 105 at 11am(don't know if it was correct) The temp at 6:45 pm yesterday was 99 according to my brother's trailblazer!

what part of PA are you from quetzal? i obviously (well my parents house) is in pittsburgh, but i went to undergrad in Shippensburg, and i'm going to grad school at IUP.


are those top pictures full frame? damn i wish i had equipment that could get me that much detail that close. great shots.

yeah, the top pics are full frame. I try to indicate crops when i make them, because a cropped image is far less versatile than a full frame image. I always resize images to 1000 pixels on the longest axis, use USM at 10 pixels and 20 percent to reduce jpg compression loss, and jpg compress until the image is around 150k.

For a digicam (not an SLR), the sony H1 is really an impressive camera. The first image was taken at 288mm equivilent with a 3 diopter close up lens, about 8 or 9 inches away. The original is really nice, definately the finest macro i have taken. It was a huge surprise when i got it home and looked at it on my monitor.

To reproduce this image with a Dslr, i would need a lens that went out to 300mm and a close-up lens that is strong enough to knock the focal length down to 6 inches...how much would THAT set me back?? I like my $350 sony more and more each day...the only downside is insufficient ISO (ISO 400 is pretty much unusable) settings, lack of stops(f/8 is the highest stop) and shutter speeds (1/1000 max). Certainly that stuff is built in intentionally, to make consumers buy more expensive cameras...we know that clean, high ISO is possible, why not build it into cheap cameras??? It's still nice to not have to haul around 10 lbs of glass.

Those are amazing! Very cool! I was out in the 100 degree shade yesterday (with 100% humidity) hoeing and digging holes to move my hostas lol I think perhaps I sweat off at least 5 pounds!!!!

I have to agree that the quality and the amount of magnification is outstanding given the equipment used. I have seen some outstanding macros with the Canon A620 also. I bought one for my daughter in the hopes that she would let me try it out on some macros as well.

You went to a lot of trouble and discomfort to get these shots. Let it me known that your efforts were well worth it. Very nice post.

Dylan8i - I'm on the other side of PA, about an hour or so west of philly. I've never been out to Pittsburgh but i have a friend who has family there.

Yeah, seeing images like this makes me want to get a good macro lens.

That is VERY impressive. I have been playing with the H2 at work, and it seems to be a neat camera.

Your posts mentions closeup lens, do you mean like the close-up filters?
