    Not Just the Early Bird

I couldn't capture a robin doing it this spring so I watched this killdeer for a while and happened to catch it this evening.

Not technically good - my apologies - but low evening light had me beyond my limits (ISO 800, 1/180s, 600mm - 300mm+2x).

But thought it might make a fun series.

Re: Not Just the Early Bird

    Thanks for looking, everyone.

My first tug-of-war images I really wish that last one (with all the body english) came out better. But 1/180s doesn't have a lot of stop action.

I was also hoping that this little guy would fly to the opposite side of me where I could have gotten a great sillouette of him tugging against the evening sky. Too bad I can't shoot what's in my head

That might be a bit scary!

Great shots BTW. Since I'm rather new here, I don't know what others' backgrounds are. Are you a professional? Have you had anything published? Several of the shots I've seen you post here are publishable IMO.

I don't know how to answer that question. Yes? No? Kinda? (last one sounds right)

I get hired to do certain things and I sell a lot of the nature-related stuff locally. I'm doing this very deliberately so that I can continue shooting what I want to shoot. I don't want to shoot my friend's weddings, neighbor's homecoming... you get the picture.

My nature images are all shot locally and I think my customers really like that. On my prints I sign them and list the shooting date and location. I feel that my customers gain a better appreciation for what's around them and what they have been missing. I don't think many people will spend $$$ for an image of sunrise in TimBuckToo. I have a gallery owner coming to my house in about an hour to pickup another print of the Birds-on-the-wire for another one of his clients.

I don't do the stock image sales as I don't want my customers to feel tricked into buying a print when they can download the same image off the web for $1.99.

Published? Yeah. But the real fun is doing what you want and having other people enjoy them too.

These are 5 out of the sequence of 6 shot in high speed continous mode (5 fps). I remember a brief pause between two of these frames but the rest were pretty much bang, bang, bang. So about 1.5 to 2 seconds at most.

I had already seen it do it so I knew what to look for. As soon as I saw that it caught another worm (there were lots of other invertebrates in between), I started shooting.

    Thanks for asking!

Re: Not Just the Early Bird

Thanks for answering my questions as best you could. I have another question for you. Is your website a free service or do you have to pay for it? I'm looking to do something similar with some local sports pics I've taken, and hopefully someday with some of my nature and wildlife pics, but I'm not sure where to start. I do have a domain name already but that's as far as I got.

Re: Not Just the Early Bird

SenorNikonMan - I pay for the service. When I started it, I paid for a yearly basic package (like $80) which included a web page editor (with templates) and it came with several email accounts and 5 pages maximum. Then I upgraded to a 20 page package so that I could have hidden pages for different clients (schools, sport teams, etc). Now I see that the "basic" package has unlimited pages but at a cost of $149/year. Don't know if that's what you want to pay for. I'm sure there are tons of other host sites and I don't know what the going rate is (I rarely spend time surfing - mainly just this site).

Paul - Thanks for the link and story - quite an amazing story to say the least!

the last one was a bit blurry, maybe electronic shutter not fast enough
by the way, what camera you use to taken these?

Most definitely. For stopping action I generally like to go no slower than 1/350s. These shots were intensionally overexposed (to give the appearance that they were shot in light brighter than it actually was as it was near sunset). Since I couldn't open up the aperture any more and I didn't want to crank up the ISO any further, the only solution left was to lower the shutter speed.

As for the camera, I use the Canon 30D almost exclusively.

    Welcome to PR!
