    Nesting dangerously

Came across this in some unprocessed raw shots taken some time ago. This is a spotted thick-knee with nest at the edge of the road. The stones in the foreground are actually the loose edge of the gravel road at the Addo Elephant National Park near where we live. Just had to lean out of the car window and pop the shot - wish they were all that simple!!!!

Nice image, thanks for sharing. We in North America do not get to see enough of birds from other parts of the world. For this guy - talk about living dangerously!!

    Cheers,

    Nice capture.

Killdeer Birds nest the same way. Last year a Nest near the lake had eggs just lying on the shore, next day the had been eaten by another animal or bird!

Thick knee! Great bird to see for us Americans Yup, many ground nesters make what seems to most people a meager attempt at a nest. Killdeer and woodcock for instance make a dent in the ground and lay eggs.. the eggs usually blend in so well you would never see them unless actually looking real hard for them.
