    Waterways

Lately I've been doing a lot of winter hiking and one of my favorite features is the forest brook or river. Snow on the ground and ice in the flow just add to the drama for me. Here's a few from this season -

the Piscataquog, probably the most beautiful river in the state. This was a grab shot off a bridge if you can credit that.

flagrantly trespassing in this lovely, half-frozen brook. Tripod needed to lose it's rubber shoes -

Smart's brook up in Waterville Valley. the afternoon sun did the trick here, bringing out the snow's texture & lighting those branches.

Further upstream on Smart's brook, different day -

thanks for checking it out. comments welcome.

I liked all of them. It looks like you did a pretty good job capturing the snow, Jeff

hey thanks. Snow can be tricky, but once you figure it out it's hard to screw up.

Nice stuff. I can never seem to capture what you captured with these, there is plenty of that type terrain for me to photograph, I can never capture it in a way I like. Nice job.

All very nice, but the first is my fav. If you don't mind me asking, did you do any PP (post production) on that one?

    Re: Waterways

Thanks EOSThree. I plan to hit most if not all of these locations in spring, too. The contrast should be pretty interesting. My ND filter will get a work out, I'm sure.

I don't know what the secret is to conveying a feeling of place in photos, but I do try to get it. Some of it is luck and instinct like the 1st & 3rd shots and some of it is spending time in a location as I did in the 2nd and 4th shots. I pictured the 4th shot in my head as I was driving to the location. Then I spent some time downstream playing with light and seeing how much was reaching the actual river. When I got to the gorge a few friends were already set up on the banks, but no one was in my spot so I set up and shot. I think I was the only one to do a wide angle like that and it seems no one is proud enough of what they got to post it to our group. Oh well...there's always next year.

    sorry for the long-winded non-answer.

SARtech - yes there is some post here, I shot in color and converted to B&W...did a bit of contrast boost and that's about it i think. I am a neophyte when it comes to PP technique and leave it to the basics most of the time since I have no clue how to do much else.
