People always tell me to "zoom with my feet." It's pretty durn hard to do that when it involves hopping fences and guardrails and then dodging race bikes! I need a 400 f/2.8. Really bad. Someone send me one!

Maybe a quality TC would help? With a prime you can usually get away with that more so than a zoom. But the big lens would be nice I agree! My biggest is 300mm and I put it on a 2x TC now and then which degrades quality somewhat but is often better than a huge crop. I've got my eye out for a good 1.4x which while not as long would have better IQ.

I was kicking myself for not buying a Bigma when I had the chance.
And of course waiting for a micro 4/3 TC

hope you dont mind coming in on this and not sure what camera you use Canon this way and use the 400L Prime probley the best birding and sport lens out, I was thinking of getting the 500L but at nearly $8000.0 it's a big ask. So I am trying another way I bought the Sony A77V and will join it up with a Sony 500 Mirror lens all up $2500. here is a shot from the 400L.

Re: must have a longer lens

I was using the OM-D so the effective 35mm fov was 600mm.
I bought the Canon 300mm f/2.8 L for motorsport and quickly found it far too short for wildlife.
Canon's long primes are great, but expensive and heavy.

Re: must have a longer lens

I am using a Nikon 200-400 etc etc coupled to a 1.4TC on a Nikon D700 (giving an effective 560mm reach on full zoom) - the results are great when the combo works but I have to say that the coupling between TC, Lens and Camera is troublesome and often gives incorrect readings and poor auto focus. Have had it repaired three times - works well initially but then fails again. It is really heavy too - much heavier than my sony a900 Bigma combo but the quality of the Nikor lens makes all the difference.
