    Moth (or Butterfly)

    Was in the yard playing with my rental 300mm f/4 L lens to get a feel for it before the smokies trip. This fellow was in the garden flitting about the kale (should we worry about caterpillars eating our kale now?). I've always thought these were a moth but really don't know for sure.

    What a great lens. The close up is a one to one crop. I'm amazed at how sharp it is.

    Antennae ending in clubs - it's a butterfly.
    Yes, the two "cabbage white" species Pieris brassicae and Pieris rapae look quite similar.

    I think it's the small white Pieris rapae and a female - first generation, sometimes there are 3 broods a year. I would guess she's egg laying.
