Finally got close, because it was cold and getting dark.
I had the end of the G9 lens within a finger's reach of the butterfly.

Macro focussing trick with the G9, set it to macro, compose, and fully press the shutter button.
As soon as the subject is in focus, it will take the picture.
Of course you likely end up with centred subjects unless you use flex focussing.
But it's dramatically improved my hand-held macros!
