I just wanted to let you know that you dividend check from Kenko will be a few cents higher this year. I just ordered a set of tubes.

Since this is the N&W forum, here is a shot of a little lizard I took in Jamaica last week. This was shot on film, and burned to a CD at Wal-mart.

Thanks Loupey. I have wanted to set up a small studio for some macro stuff, but just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe the tubes will push me in that direction a little faster.

I'm not sure what that critter is. The island was crawling with little lizards.

Once spring comes, perhaps we'll post a dedicated sticky thread for macros taken strictly with tubes.

I think many people out there may be intimidated with the cost of a "macro" lens and they may be inspired with the results of these low-budget accessories.

Thanks for looking and hope you get a chance to try out the "tubes". It's funny because everytime I go out trying to shoot birds and mammals (inspired by others here), I never fail to come home with more macros than anything else

I forgot to ask you if you have a web link to that catalog with your image on it. I used to get your catalogs until our recent move.


Yesterday, I picked up my set of traveling/backpacking lenses (28mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8, and 85mm 1.8). A quick test of the 50 and 85 with tubes seem promising. I should have some images to post in the tubes thread soon. BTW, I didn't get the 50mm 1.4 after all. All the raving reports here about the 1.8 version (and all the corresponding great images posted here from it) and the fact that I figure I'd use the 28 and 85mm more helped my decision.

And the fact that it's only $80 bucks, well, it's only $80 bucks

I too am looking forward to playing with the tubes, and the 50mm 1.8. They should be here on Monday.

Well great to hear, Ben! I'm glad your skill (or luck) at gambling has paid off.

Now that I've had some time to use shorter primes with tubes, I can see that I can push these lenses too far, in terms of edge-to-edge sharpness. Still gathering data, but so far it seems there is about a 1:3 ratio (total extension compared to focal length) which appears in effect. I never really noticed it before because I would use the 70-200mm at the 200mm end or the 300mm. The few times that I did use the zoom at the 70mm end did kinda suck - but I had previously attributed that to the fact that the 70-200mm is sharper at the 200mm end.

The results with the 85mm are great as long as I stay with minimal amount of extension (12mm or 20mm). Results get really goofy when I put two or all three tubes on at once.

Will post some examples soon.

i am just looking to play with them .. maybe do some scrounging in the spring / summer with it and see what kind of shots i can get ....
