    Kingfishers

Anyone else have some King fishers to offer? Interesting how the female and male Giant Kingfishers exchange the position of the rufous marking on belly / chest. The pied is reputed to be the best fisher of them all - we watch them for hours - they tirelessly hover and dive in the river near us and have become firm favourites.
The brown hooded is a ground feeder - insects etc.

I love Kingfishers... a challenging bird to shoot! It's like they laugh at you as they fly away!!!

Beautiful species you have! I love kingfishers too - unfortunately we only have 1 species in my area and they are quite difficult to approach. Despite hunting for them aggressively last year, I bet my total elapsed time watching them didn't amount to more than half an hour.

    Re: Kingfishers

I was just watching a belted kingfisher a little while ago. Very tuff to get close too. I saw a few in South Africa a couple years ago that were gorgeous. Had a beautiful pied kingfisher within a few feet of me, but it took off before I was able to get a photo. I can still picture it in my mind though.

I was in Egpyt for several weeks and found the Pied kingfisher very friendly. The belted is VERY shy...

    Re: Kingfishers

We are fortunate to have 10 species of Kingfisher in our region. Many are very difficult to get to or not represented close by. They are: Giant, Pied, Half-collared,Malachite, African Pygmy, Woodland, Mangrove, Brown-Hooded, Grey-Headed, and Striped. I'll scratch out a few more pics and post.
