Imm. Red-tailed Hawk in SW Ontario

I managed to get fairly close to this guy and he sat still for me to take a bunch of pictures.

This one was with my Canon Digital Rebel XT @: 190mm, 1/1600, 5.6, ISO 800.

It is always a thrill to get close to these guys. I would suggest dropping the ISO a bit as you seem to have more than a fast enough shutter speed for 190mm. You probably could have dropped down to ISO 200 and been OK.

I know it is really tough since the birds don’t usually give you much of a chance to chose the background but it would have been nice it the bird wasn’t partially obscured by the branches and the power-line in the background is a bit distracting. If you had a longer lens you might have been able to get a better angle.

Thanks for the nice comments and helpful critiques...I became aware of the ISO "issue" right after I got back in the truck....*sigh*...I was SO excited about him staying still while I got right underneath him, that I totally forgot about it. Another result of my excitement was the wire behind him. I had plenty of time to move around for a better background, but I just stayed in one spot shooting. I was shooting in sport mode as I was walking up to him, but once I realised he was going to sit still I changed to fully manual. Oh well...live and learn. My new 400mm prime lens should be in on Wednesday of next week, so I hope to post some more after it shows up.

Randy believe me, I completely understand where you are coming from because I have been there so many times in the past. I am sure you are going to love the 400 and also that as you get close to more and more hawks you will be posting some absolute wall-hangers here.
