    I want this lens!!!

    http://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/english...200_500_28.htm

If I had the money, it would be real hard choosing between this one and the Canon 600mm f/4L. The Sigma looks SWEET! And heavy... looks like it should be mounted on a tank

    Re: I want this lens!!!

That thing is a BEAST! I love it....I love the fact that it 'comes standard' with a 2X TC, making it a 400-1000mm (add the Canon 1.6 from the Dig Reb and it's a 640mm to 1600mm!)at F5.6.

I'm not sure I want to lug that through the bush all day...that would end up for blind shooting methinks...

    Thanks for the link!

    Re: I want this lens!!!

LOL! Where is the camera in that image of the lens?!

I can't see anyone buying/using it tho. Like the 200mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.2, superfast lenses are being overshadowed by the improvements in digital noise reduction.

Easier to carry around an ISO 800, than a 200-500mm f/2.8!

    wow.

    ok, wow again.

the minimum focal distance DoF of a f/2.8 500mm must be about an inch, i'm not really sure where that would be useful - maybe with really tiny birds, or with subjects that are far enough away like airplanes. Besides, that thing looks like it needs it's own flatbed truck to get it where it is going. I guess no one is going to be handholding it.

I'm with you Paul. I would gladly take that thing for a test drive in the feild if someone want's to pick up the bill on it. Did anyone see a price tag on the lens? If they can do this, they should turn thery 800mm f/5.6 into an f/4.

I don't think they have announced the price yet, or the weight. They have to know how much that thing weighs... wonder why they wont announce it yet

That lens will go for over $7,000 easy... I bet over $8,000

After giving it some more thought.... I STILL WANT IT!!!

    Re: I want this lens!!!

Photo John posted some pics and some more info on this lens in this thread:

    Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8 Zoom Lens

He said the lens weighs 28 pounds, and the lens shade weighs another 7 pounds. The estimated price is between $15,000 - $20,000!!!

    Re: I want this lens!!!

When my friend started out he carried 38+ pound of camera/ tripod. 1V/ 600F4, WHIMBERLEY, GITZO 410 LEGS, BATTERY PACK AND DUAL 550'S. He carried it miles too.

Add 10 pounds to that and that is what this lens on 1548 CF legs would weigh. I see this lens as a low light fast lens for stationary situations like sports.

    Re: I want this lens!!!

The cost is about what I figured but that weight is higher than I assumed. That is a lot of glass!

A quick fun calculation: let say we ordered one without the 7 pound hood and got a deal for $15,000. That's a little over $33 per ounce.

Or in other words, about the current value of a block of pure silver weighing 72.5 pounds
