    I found

a little baby praying mantis in the back yard a little while ago.... but before I could even take a step, my dog stepped on it He squished it down into the grass and I couldn't find it after that.

I wouldn't be surprised if he killed it. For those that dont know.. my dog just turned 1 and is 130 lbs.

It was still cool to see. The last praying mantis I found.. bit me. But then, I did pick it up lol.

Good thing you don't live in CT or else your dog would have been arrested. The Praying Mantis is our state insect or something like that, lol.

    Re: I found

That would be a "whoops" moment.

Don't you love it how dogs are just so happy and haven't got a clue what's going on? (me dog person).

    Re: I found

lol yeah.. and this guy is just a big dopey puppy! He's never aware of whats going on lol Look at that face...

I had another one too.. I am so mad! Today, I was uncovering the pool and scooping all the leaves out when I hear a cool bird call up above. I look up and there is a HAWK! and not only a hawk, but a hawk with something in its talons.. calling away.. then ANOTHER one appears!! I ran across the yard, jumped down a 4ft brick wall, up the steps of the deck and into the house where I tried to hurry up and put my card back in my camera, but by the time I came back out, they were way far away and I only got one more glimpse before they went behind the tree line.

Amber, you are just having all kind of bad luck. I would have really been ticked too, missing the hawks like you did.

My kids used to always tell me, "Dad, leave your camera at home. We never see anything when you have it." They were right. When I didn't have my camera is when we'd see the wildlife.

If the hawk was calling to another..... you have a pair in the area and they will be back.

    Re: I found

I hope so Paul! My mom said back in March right before I got here that they had one that was landing on their bird feeders trying to catch the little birds. Perhaps these are the same ones!

Amber, Brochie certainly looks like a big old softie to me, I just love that face. I can picture his big paw coming down on that little praying mantis. :yikes: OUCH!

I also had a similar experience to you, a sparrowhawk came into the garden trying to catch the smaller birds on the feeders, I ran to get my camera but when I came out again it was gone. Very frustrating.:cryin:

Amber, redtailed hawks do most of the calling in my area. KEEEEEEEER, KEEEEEEEER(sound eagles make in movies..hahaha). They are not bird eaters, but sharpshinned and cooper's hawks are

    Re: I found

LOL - Agree with Paul - Eagles sound NOTHING like the movies portray them! Most of the hawks around my feeders (Red Shouldered) are there for the rodents. Have never seen one take a bird.

Amber - Hawks are very habitual. Like Paul said, you will probably be able to go back there around the same time of day, and find him again. I have a pair of Red Shouldered Hawks near my home that are so predictable, I can literally set up and wait for them to land on a particular fence post just after sunrise!

    Re: I found

Thanks guys! I thought I heard the call again today when I was out there with the dog, but I couldn't see anything

I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled!
