This is great! But the color seems off to me. Is the white balance wacky or should it really be this red? Also, can you tell us what your exposure info and what lens you used?

    Re: Hummingbird in flight

    Thanks Eric & John.

The exposure was 1/400 second at f/8, ISO 800 with the 40D, 70-200mm f/2.8 IS + 2x TC shot at 305mm. Exposure and focus were both manual.

This was shot pretty late in the day so the sun was very low and warm. I believe I did tweak the white balance but I don't have access to the original image right now. I will go back and play with it again later tonight. Part of the red issue could also be reflecting off of the feeder. There is a red feeder just out of frame to the right.

You stopped those wings at 1/400 sec with no flash? Is it alive? - Terry

    Simply Gorgeous!!

It is quite an accomplishment to capture a hummingbird, and to do it so so sharply is even better

I like the warm tones and the light outlining the chest and beak (?) is great

Looks like something an artist would paint

    Congratulations

Nice catch! I agree the image has a painterly quality about it.
I think it could be just a tad brighter IMO but that isn't a significant issue.

    Re: Hummingbird in flight

    John,

Here is another version with a slightly more cool white balance. This is the daylight WB straight from the camera. The original image I posted is ACR's daylight WB. The cameras WB is 5000 deg. K, ACR's is 5500 deg. K. It's not a lot but it makes a very noticeable difference.

I liked the warm tones of the original I posted, now you have me thinking maybe it wasn't the best choice...

    Nice pic..........
I love these little critters. They are hard to get a good picture of. Out of 100 shots, I might get two that are decent. They are just so fast. Keep photographing and posting them.
