    Hey, where are the spiders?

Here's two (tiny ones) - both outdoor on breezy days without a tripod :mad2:

The first one was tough! Shot last week with all three tubes on my 70-200. Found a life and death struggle near the tip of a very long evergreen branch. Between holding my breath and trying to match my rocking to the branch in the wind, I only came away with 2 out of about 20 which were somewhat acceptable. Had to shoot at ISO 400 (yikes!) just to get 1/250s at f/5.6 - a compromise between freezing the wind and getting deeper DOF.

Well, I thought nobody wanted to play spider games, so I didn't push the issue.

Here's an old file from Anahauc near Galveston Texas.

yes, and these guys weren't HUGE on the scale of things.

I tried to measure this guy, but he kept running up my arm. I had to settle for this.

again, archive, low resolution + old camera

Thanks for the demo, CJ! I have a bunch of pansies at home (hope they're not reading) who would freak out if they came across even that last one.

Look forward to seeing some more from you.

Wait a minute... some of you keep these creatures as pets! This assignment is definitely skewed.

So when are we going to have a "Hamster Week" or "Goldfish Week"? Huh?

Re: Hey, where are the spiders?

I assure you that was walking on the ground 1 minute earlier ;) That is not a pet tarantula, but a wild one from Sedona AZ that was attracted to the insects around the light in the parking lot outside our condo .

Nature isn't scary my friend, I play harmoniously with her every chance I get

My shots are all of creatures dwelling IN THE WILD AND OUTSIDE.

This is the 'Arizona Upland of the Sonoran Desert'. They just happen to live here.

Payn, thanks for the great visual

Paul and CJ, fair enough - my erroneous assumption. Still, I don't think I would place any wild arachnid that large on any part of my body. Someone else's body, probably.

Re: Hey, where are the spiders?

I can honestly say that the only insects I am afraid of are bees(hornets and wasps) and those big freaky centipedes out west. I am not that afraid of bees, but I am allergic to them from being stung so many times .

Oh wait..... I once jumped out of a tree because the scariest looking paracistic wasp came out of nowhere and buzzed me.It was seriously 3 inches long head to borer/ ovapositors. very similiar to this one...

Re: Hey, where are the spiders?

On a heavily traveled path leading to a heavily visited tourist site in the woods, I once stepped on a (hornets?) ground nest which was only about a foot off the main trail. Got stung about 6 times simultaneously before I knew what hit me. Imagine me running around in circles with a heavy tripod on one shoulder and a camera bag on the other while people all around didn't get stung once.

Re: Hey, where are the spiders?

Back to the subject at hand: Caught this one last night next to my casa - literally. My head jammed sideways against my deck, the front of the lens rubbing the supporting leaves, and my eye looking through the viewfinder at an angle.

Variable close focusing using tubes and a zoom. Did I ever tell you about the advantages of extension tubes

Re: Hey, where are the spiders?

HAHAHA.... Imagine cutting down a tree with a hidden hornet(bald faced wasp actually) nest in it. I got stung atleast 40 times repeatedly . I ended up calling for the spray truck loaded with Sevin and nuked that tree that was laying in the customers driveway. The customer was advised not to "play in the yard for 72 hours" , but their kids stopped getting stung by hornets for some reason. Nice of them to let us know the nest was there huh?

My best bee encounter was 20 feet up a hollow cherry tree cutting the "stick" down in sections as to not ruin the landscaping. I was cutting through when all of the sudden 100's of bees flew out and covered me head to waist!!!! I thought I was dead!

They were honey bees and I only got stung once 5 minutes after getting out of the trees..SLOWLY

BTW... My brother and I used to remove hornet nest from trees for $50 a piece with a pole clip and a guy catching the nest in a garbage can with some gas in it the gas fumes would kill them, if you caught it, then we would sell the nest to a guy for $75-200 who laminated them and sold them. That was easy money back in 1990

Sounds like a scene ready for America's Funniest Videos! All it needs is someone to sneak up to the guy holding the garbage can and pushing him out of the way just as the nest is cut
