Have you ever seen a Plover scowl?

I found half a dozen of these Black Bellied Plovers foraged along the beach in the company of a flock of Dunlins. the first image is to show what they normally look like. Then notice in the second image that this same bird is looking quite grumpy. Is it just a trick of the light, or do they really have that much facial mobility and expressiveness?
