Are blue herons loners? It seems to me most of the time I only see one heron at a time.

Yes, and they are territorial too. Males will not toerate other males on their turff. I have seen some great battles.

Interesting observation about two birds together. I have never seen more than one at a time as they migrate through our part of the world - western prairies.

Nope they are two different pics. The second is just a very slight crop of the original. Cropped for content, not size.

I got the ∑ 28-300 DG HZ. I am just slightly regreting it, because I didn't take into account how slow it is; f/6 at full tele.

I know what you mean John. My 500mm is f/6.3 on the long end, but I stop it down to f/8 or f/9 because it's so soft wide open. The slow speed is a killer on long lenses.
