    Going to Glacier this July

Mid July, we're going to go to Glacier for a week, followed by Yellowstone for a week. I'm going with my parents, who are not photographers, so while I'm not sure at which point I manage to drive them nuts by wanting to set up stay in one place for two hours trying to get shots of a ruddy duck or something, but I'm pretty sure it's going to happen :P

I've never been to glacier before, any suggestions on good places to shoot?

Re: Going to Glacier this July

It's been a few years since I went to Glacier so I don't know how much help I will be, but here it goes. I remember seeing big horn sheep at the top of Going To The Sun Road at the visitor center. They were across the road from the parking lot and eventually came right into the parking lot. I also remember seeing Dall Sheep near the top of GTTSR as well. I believe we saw deer and elk at the lower elevations. We saw black bears almost everyday at glacier, again at lower elevations. Some great waterfalls along GTTSR but not always near a place to pull over and park.

If you have time, and a vehicle with good suspension, I highly recommend making a day trip to Pollbridge on the west side of the park. The road is like a washboard, but the little town is worth the trip. Stop at the Mercantile for some fresh baked goods! Once you get to Pollbridge, there is another entrance to go back into the park on the west side.

Since you are planning on spending a week there, be sure to get out and do some hiking too!

Here is an old thread I dug up with some pics and info from my trip there back in 2007.

Re: Going to Glacier this July

I LOVE GLACIER! The visitor center at Logan's Pass (Going to Sun Hwy) is a MUST. You are GUARANTEED to see some VERY photogenic BHS and Mountain Goats. Take the short hike to Hidden Lake.
-If you have time or up for a hike I would walk some of the Highland Trail. The trail head is across the road from the center. The first 1/2 mile is a must!!! VERY cool. The trail is about 2 feet wide. I had a family of Mountain goats pass me. I had to back up against to wall to let them pass.
-All of the lodges are beautiful and worth the visit.
-The view of Wild Goose Island is CLASSIC.
    - St Marys lake is a good place for Grizzly. I saw eight within a mile.
    - Pollbridge is out of the way but worth it. The Mercantile alone is worth it!!! The bakery is amazing!!!! If you want a cool dinner experience eat at "the northern lights". its right next door.

Ill keep you posted if I think of anything else. Let me know if you have any other questions.
The first step is BEING THERE to take it...
