I made my way to Kankakee county to look for some of the unique critters found there. The area is an extinct lake and is now totally sand prarie, with many sand prarie reptiles that normally don't occur this far east. This spring's awful weather kept most things underground but I managed to round up a glass lizard and a bunch of racerunners, along with a couple of baby milksnakes.
glass lizards are legless, and look just like snakes to the casual observer.
closer inspection reveals that they have ears, and a dorsolateral fold that aids in locomotion.
And another type of (legged) lizard, the six-lined racerunner. Very common, usually seen as they scurry away. It was chilly and had rained the days previous, so they were all tucked away under cover.
Dang, who has who?
