    getting CLOSER - micro photography.

I've recently been working on getting closer macros. Some of the smallest full frame bugs I have are flies - this is a full frame shot that is about as close as I can get with my normal shooting equipment.

Using some newspaper and duct tape, I've fashioned an adapter to mount a reversed vivitar 50mm f/1.7 lens in front of my native lens. the magnification from this is absolutely incredible, but it is also incredibly difficult to use. Here are the smallest things I have ever photographed, some ants. These are about as long as the HEAD on the fly I shot above. actual magnification must be about 8 or 10 times life size.

You can see that even though I stopped all the way down, the DoF is still smaller than the ant's head. This is going to take some getting used to! The light was terrible today, with any luck I will get some better light this week so that I can crank the shutter speed a bit. I think I need to find another lens with a slightly larger objective lens - a larger objective might let me zoom out a bit without getting fatal vignetting, this was aweful at any zoom range under 360mm. It would be nice to go down to 250mm with this setup. Time will tell. Here's a portrait of a crane fly.

This setup also reduces contrast, robs light, and is not terribly sharp.

    Excellent tinkering, McGyver!

Love to see an image of your rig. I know - it takes another camera to photograph a camera - how about a camera phone at least.

    Keep on experimenting
