    In a fly's eye...

I rented the new Canon 100mm macro 2.8L IS to play with. Great lens! I do still prefer the working distance of my 300mm with tubes, but the IQ from this lens is outstanding.

We always called these guys house flies, but looking them up I see they're actually called blow or bottle flies.

3 Missed the focus, but I like this shot. He looks like he's smoking a cigarette!

So what do you think of the hybrid IS performance in this lens?

I've heard that it is more effective at portrait distances rather than for macro work. I'm sure it is beneficial - just not sure if it provides full benefits at around 1:1

I've been contemplating trying this lens or the Zeiss 100mm f/2 makro-planar (I need a kick-butt portrait lens as well).

    What's a Loupe for anyway?

I'd rented the original 100mm macro last year, and I feel like there's a noticeable difference with stability handheld. That said, I also had not done any real macro shooting when I rented the original, so I can't say how much was pilot error and how much was the lack of IS.

Definitely not as effective at 1:1 as further distances, but I think you get still at least an extra two stops with it at 1:1.

The af is pretty good for a macro lens, but if I recall that's not something you'll care about
