100-400 around 200mm? with a 500D closeup lens ... slightly cropped

.....and that's what I am calling them atleast :lol: If anyone knows what these really are, I'd love to know. I found 3 of them today and wasn't looking too hard.

I have come to the conclusion that the 100-400 W/500D gets me very close to 1:1 if not right there. The problem is at f13 my DOF is under an inch still.

This is a quick grab at 400mm(no closeup) and cropped. I was in butterfly mode and a swallowtail won't fit in the frame at 100mm with the closeup filter.

I have tried some "close ups" with my 170-500mm lens, but with a close focusing limit of about 9', it takes a BIG bug to fill the frame!!! I wonder what an 86mm close up filter would cost

I used kenko tubes with my 170-500 and they got me quite close. The whole set of tubes costs as much as a 77mm 500D costs. Closeup lenses are not all created equal and the 500D ranks right up at the top

I was wondering about the cost of that 500D of yours. Anything with "Canon" scribed around the outside automatically puts it in the 3-digit price field

A set of tubes is high on my shopping list, but it won't be for a while yet...

The first one does it for me, did you use a flash?

The shot was taken at -.6 exposure in camera because I forgot to switch it back to zero comp(then adjusted up to no comp afterwards with WP adjustment) and my flash was set to - 2/3 comp to fill in the harsh shadows from mid day sun. The flash is barely visible , as it should be

You're getting right in the spirit Paul. Nice attempt with that setup. The first one has a lot of potential. As you know I'm more of an under expose kind of guy, but these to me are a little over. There is a lot to think about when you move in close and it takes a little getting use to. That 1 inch DOF sounds great to me however. Many time you have to work with a very shallow depth if you are up close and hand holding, with a moving object things just get real hectic.

actually... These were under by .6 and I quickly set a white point to the jpeg. Being as these are not great, I see no reason to spend over 3 minutes editing them

The one inch DOF is around 300mm, I bet it's .6 inches at 400mm !!!

I took a few at 400mm/500D at F20 and a weevil was barely inside the DOF because I was focuses slightly infront(millimeters) due to shaking. I think the 500D would shine on a 70-200 ! I may go out today with a 28-70 /500D and see what happens
