    FCB or feather-covered butt shots

This bird was not being cooperative.
Looks a little larger than the gull, and the shape of that tail end ought to be distinctive, as should the red bill and tan head.
But I can't get whatbird.com to give me an ID.
In the UK I'd say Goosander or Merganser, am I close?

Paul, my birdbook suggests that it is an adult female Common Merganser. HTH.

    Thanks.
I knew the family, and the UK book only gave the two possibles.
At whatbird.com online I wasn't so sure about the ID from their picture.
