    Fantail

This is is one of a pair that come most mornings to feed off that lace wings that are infesting our jasmine plant. These are a friendly little bird but extremely active. That is the top of an old shovel handle that this one is briefly perching on.

Fantail... These guys look really cool when when the tail is fully fanned out, this allows their amazing maneuverability in flight enabling them to catch small insects on the wing. The other name for this bird is Piwakawaka .Thanks for commenting Belogus and Bob

Very unique bird Pete, I don't think I've seen anything like it. Are they fairly common in NZ?

Thanks Ken They aren't common like say a sparrow but there are quite a few around. They are qiite fearless and will come very close . Very agile little bird and cats rarely catch them, at times it is almost as if they are taunting the cats.
Folk law has it that if they come inside your house that this is a forewarning of a impending death in the family.
