    OK...

    #1. Nashville warbler...?
    #2. Not sure.

Mind if I toss up a couple of my older "hard-to-identify" bird shots?

HOW are you editing in my forum? Can I edit in any forum as a Mod too?

That is the rarest warbler hybrid in north america and is the only known one to be alive. The other is a preserved animal .... mourning warbler x common yellowthroat. Has 90% of the appearance of a mourning warbler, but was doing only the common yellowthroat song for 3 hours. I could not get closer than 100 feet because it was in a willow in a silted in river bed..... sunk to my waste in mud 5 feet from shore

The second is a field sparrow molting into first fall plumage.

Go nuts, I love a challenge

Paul - I deleted my own post - not someone else's. You can probably do the same in any forum.

You got me there. We'll see how you do with my shots...

Also, I've got to admit that you are probably the more skilled one. I am looking forward to learning more from this forum - so please be patient and correct me if I make any mistakes.

I boast no skills regarding my bird ID'ing abilities. I use three classifications to describe a bird:

    1) small, medium, large
    2) dark, light, brown
    3) pecker-eater, seed-eater, bug-eater, fish-eater

    So 3 x 3 x 4 = 36 combinations. I can positively ID 36 birds

So you're all experts in my book. I like my current arrangement with Paulnj - I'll shoot 'em, he will ID 'em. It just sucks when I find out later that some bird I shot a few frames was a highly sought after bird

Domesticated Mallard and a small light fisheater would be a Giant Kingfisher (Ceryle maxima) in flight... in africa

I have a virus and it takes 10 minutes to load pages.... sorry I took so long to reply, but housecall(Trend) is working on it because norton and AVG can't locate it.

I think this is a ring-necked pheasant I ran into, is it not?

It came out in front of me crossing the drive-way to the sanctuary. So I stopped my car and just shot through the windshield in a hurry. The original was under-exposed by a lot.

    Wait a minute...is that a Northern Harrier?

Usually when I see one it's usually in flight so...

No, not a harrier. To me (TTFWIW ) it looks like a coopers.

Re: Summer 2008 Bird ID Thread.

There are those that feel that the bird in the 'Featured Photo' above is a pine siskin (sharp beak) rather than the claimed female house finch. What say you O' learned ones? - TF

    I'd say Pine siskin.:yesnod:

    • Sharp, pointy beak. (House finch has a broader, blunter one).
    • Thiner belly stripes. (House finch's are thicker).

Also, the photo doesn't show this – but if you saw yellow on the bird's wings – then it is definitely a siskin. The yellow is on top of the wing, but can be visible during flight.
