I have been a real slacker when it comes to wildlife photos this year, but here are a few shots of a waddled crane from a couple of weeks ago. These were taken at the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo WI. The only place in the world where you can see all 15 species of cranes.

Almost all of the birds at the ICF are in cages, so getting natural looking shots is kind of hard. I don't remember what type of cranes these two are, but they are kind of funky looking.

I just stumbled upon this thread and I happened to have two birds that perhaps some of you know what they are. Hopefully the first one might not be too difficult given it's looking right back at you ;-)
Is this a sandhill crane? If so, why the rusty color?
Yes, it's a sandhill crane. They get the rusty color from the mud in the fields where they look for food. The mud gets on their beaks, and as they prean, the mud stains their feathers.

Here it is December in Wisconsin with lots of snow on the ground and look what is still around my water dish. I'd have expected these Eastern Bluebirds to be long gone by now. There were six of them here yesterday. Getting close for me to head south for the winter too.
