Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
I couldn’t wait for Jaedon to start a new ID thread :blush2: Sorry Jaedon.
What is this bird??? It was about the size of chickadee, maybe smaller. I hate to post bad images of birds for ID’s, but that’s usually what I get the first time I see them. These little guys would not come out of this brush.
edit- I think I found it... A golden-crowned kinglet?

Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
Golden crowned kinglet it is.
Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
Thank you Paul, that little bugger was driving me crazy... I kept looking at warblers.
Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
I set up the tripod and ran an extention cord from the camera to the house and took some shots of the house sparrows flying to the feeder. When I went back out to get the camera this woodpecker was at the feeder. He stayed around the nearby tree and eventually flew back to the feeder. I was about 8 feet away.
I know what kind of woodpecker it is, but lets see if anyone wants to guess or research it.

Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
OK, so I'm in the habit of training my lens on any object flying my way. I shot these thinking they were mallards. Northern Shovelers? If so, I have to rethink looking at ducks because any I've seen at a distance I immediately dismiss as mallards.
Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
N. shovelers indeed... look at those bills.
Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
paul . this is a shot from another photograhpher but has everybody stumped. closest we could figure was green jay but marking and bill are not quite right.

Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
Terryger, that is one cool looking bird! I can't wait to see what Paul comes up with.
My first banded birds :D I can’t figure out if they are herring or Iceland gulls (they were hanging around together)… and, what I really can’t figure out is why they are banded??? The bird in the first image has a band on each leg, and the bird in the second image only has one. Why would they band gulls?

Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
That is a NON US species from south america and I have no clue :)
I asked my friends to help on this one.
Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
Herring gull... too much black in the tail and pink legs.
Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
Thanks Paul, do you have any idea why they would band such a common bird?
Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
tracking the movement of the bird. ICELAND gulls are common in their home range too :D
Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
This is either a purple finch or the most colorful house finch I've ever seen... I can't tell them apart.

Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
PURPLE FINCH by color alone
Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
That's one strong branch for how thin and flimsy conifer branches are! Cool image of turkey vultures too!
Re: Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread
I have absolutely no idea Paul. Sorry for the work out we're giving you yet again lol.

That green south american bird is really pretty. It looks like a conure in colouration but not in confirmation

I wasn't able to get great images of these guys but the first one here I took a couple weeks ago near my house, I think its an eastern Phoebe?

This yellow-rumped warbler visited one of my suet feeders about a week ago, I'm hoping he'll come back again:
