Early Spring 07 Bird ID Thread

Liked it, but didn't think this needed its own thread...

Ok I suck at ID's now lol. I thought the sap sucker was a woodpecker for SUUURE this time.

The Flicker someone around here thought was a yellow shafted... is there much of a difference between a YS flicker and a Northern?

And thanks CK. I have a few that were better that I found during more post work after I posted this thread. I'll post them in the main forum now that I know what they are.

Yes it's a yellow shafted variety of the northern flicker. The western birds are red shafted variety.

Sapsuckers are woodpeckers, the belong to the family Picidae, just like all woodpeckers do :)

Ok I am guessing at sparrow but I have no idea what type. It might even be a finch for all I know. Around the same size or slightly larger than the house finch.

Can I get some help with this guy? He was in a field 'puddle'... My guess would be a Bonaparte's Gull, but if so, it must be transient. I don't think it stays for any length of time in my area. (SW Ontario.)

Shot today in FL...

Been trying to get a good shot of one of these for a couple of years. Finally got lucky.

That is the oddest tricolor heron I've seen. It's in breeding plumage, but the throat isn't yellow. That breeding plumage cattle egret is SWEET!

Greg, that is one of the hardest birds to photograph! I actually found one at 5 feet away up near tyler tx about 5 years ago while visiting my mother.I also found and photographed a yellow-billed loon on that trip too :D

It's a crappy shot, but it's all I could get. Could this be a brown thrasher? My first guess was a wood thrush, but the tail and beak look too long.

Sure that's 100% brown thrasher.

This is as close as i could get to this Kestrel :( but i got the Song Sparrow closup :) And can you see them , your probably going to say im nuts but im talking about the leaf buds lol :) Hard to believe that im out in short pants today and we had a snow storm that droped 6 inches on us last monday . The weather is real wacky up here lol.

Ok this guy wouldn't get very close to me at all. He was soaring over a small wetland and landed on top of teh Ontario Science Center which I was walking below. These are HEAVY crops taken from about 1/4 mile in distance. I am guessing RT hawk but the body colours don't look right to me.

If they are all the same hawk, that is definately a red-tailed hawk from the first image. The lack of a belly band is uncommon in red-taileds but not unheard of at younger ages.

I finally got an opportunity to stop by an area that had a nesting pair of bald eagles. They were feeding one chick and so I couldn't get a better look.

They were holding a wildlife weekend so the rangers temporarily moved the barrier lines to within 1/8 mile. Much to the dismay of the local birders.

Cool, I have a nest right down the road from me, but I can't get images.

Thanks Paul. It's definitely the same bird in all 5 shots. I followed him for about a half hour as he soared over and circled around but I never got any closer than about the 1/4 mile mark. I thought it might have been a juvi but you've confirmed it for me. My wife was swearing up and down that it was a peregrine but I knew from teh wing structure that there was just no way.
