    Dragons

Shot these today with a D200 and Sigma 50-500mm lens on a monopod. I was using some spot-metering and some flash and can't remember which of these had flash...

You 'da Man! These are great dragonfly images. Just how far away were they when you were using the 50-500? I've seen some really good images (like these!) from that lens and some that were only so-so. A friends son has this lens in the EOS mount, I may have to make a deal with jay to 'rent' it some weekend.

Thanks. I was just outside of the minimum focusing distance, which is 5 feet or so, if I remember right. I like the lens and use it for its 500mm length. It isn't as sharp as most of my other lenses, but it sharp enough and the best 400-500mm reach I've found that doesn't cost as much as a small car. As I mentioned in another post, I've started using a sturdy monopod and that makes a big difference. It's also helpful to stop it down a bit. Unfortunately, the max aperture is f/6.3, so stopping it down, you quickly get to f/8 or f/11, which requires a long shutter speed.

    Great shooting.

Are there two species here or three? Were these in the same general vicinity?

They are all different, except #1 & #2. They were within a few feet of one another.
