    To catch a Mayfly!

These sparrows were a familiar sight just before dusk, trying to catch Mayflys over the river.

    Re: To catch a Mayfly!

    Incredible.

Trying to catch either one alone in flight is difficult enough. To capture both in one frame is just incredible!

I take the bird got a morsel to eat?

Now come on! Two in-flights in the same capture?! Different species even! How can we mere mortals compete with that?!

I don't recall ever seeing anything more real life than that. This one should be in a magazine.

    Next time, go for three

    Re: To catch a Mayfly!

BevB, if you have Photoshop, open the image and have a look at Adjustment Levels and you will see the histogram, has some distance where it ends from the left and right sliders. Move the slide diamonds in from each side to where they histogram starts on either side, then move the middle diamond just slightly to the left and watch your image as you do this. You should see a vast improvement in the overall detail of the image, especially the colours of the bird.

    Re: To catch a Mayfly!

Thank you sooo much for all your kind comments they are greatly valued! and to be told it should be in a magazine is the icing on the cake! thank you Loupey and quetzal. (perhaps il give it a try) . Thanks Peter for your advice, but i had actually used the levels tool but as it was 8oclock in the evening plus very drizzly weather,so i was abit wary of over doing it but i have done this image using the shadow/highlight tool, comments welcome.

Great capture. I would not 'tweak' it any more. It is very obvious what is in the photo and the almost silhouette just amplifies the effect of the photograph.

actually, I think a little more shadow detail wtll make it better. I am sure most people don't know this is actually a dorsil view That is the best part about this image IMHO.

    Re: To catch a Mayfly!

    Bev,

There is plenty of detail in the shadows to do a levels adjustment and get colors out of the bird.

I do like the silhouette effect tho.

You should submit to a bird magazine or two.

    Dorsal or Ventral?
I'm not sure at this resolution, but I thought I could see feet ...

It's a dorsal view. With the levels tweaked you can actually see the back feathers being lifted by the vortex created by the abrupt maneuver. This bird is pulling some (relative) Gs.

Bev, this really is an awesome shot. I'm amazed that you were able to get this one. Including both bird and bug simply befuddles me.

    What lens were you using?

Must get an LCD for home (don't tell Mrs W. I waid that) because it's so much clearer on my laptop. I can see the feathers now.

    Re: To catch a Mayfly!

Thanks everyone for your kind comments and views, over here in the UK sparrows (house & Tree) are becoming fewer and fewer and looked upon as quite a boring little bird so i am glad i was able to catch him in a more exciting situation. Kokopeli, i use the 70-200L f2.8 IS USM lense, I rarely use anthing else for this type of shooting, my old faithfull!
