    Double Up

Having only seen 2 other northern flickers in the past, I managed to double my sighting count instantly.

Caught this "pair" in the first morning light (at least the first rays to make it through the trees). The one on the left was doing a side-to-side dance that I thought was a mating ritual (but curiously late in the season). But markings show they are both males. Don't know what was going on as they stayed together and flew off together.

Not a great shot but I was happy with the sighting.

That is a very interesting bird. I've never seen one before. Nice depth-of-field on your photo.

Those are both adult males in migration, though woodpeckers hunt common grounds when not in mating season, just like people flock to McDonalds.

    Re: Double Up

Update: The northern flickers are still around. Saw two this morning - this time I believe it was a male and female pair - but I didn't get a photo confirmation of the female to be sure. Still a rare treat.

Anyway, it is a rare shot (for me at least) to get everything to come together like this in the woods - a patch of sunlight making it through to where I would like it - a target species landing in said patch - and a clear shooting angle to said species.

I wish I could have gotten a complete side profile of the body but I'll take it.

    Beautiful shot & awesome colors!

We do have Northern Flickers around our house up here, they are the red-shafted kind. I'll see if I can get some good photos.
