Does this work or is it just a mess?

Taken walking along the embarcadero in San Diego. I am torn whether the moving images helps with the movement of the birds, or if it is a mess and toss it out.

    A little help please.

    Thanks,

I personally think either the BG of subject should be sharp myself, but I am only one person

    Hi Paul-

Usually that is what is what you see in shots of this type. I just don't know if the background movement helps or not. I guess if it takes this much thought, it isn't all that great.

I wouldn't trash it though I think it could have artistic appeal to some, just not me

Arthur Morris takes many blurry images(BG and subject) and they are very artistic.

Ok. I appreciate the insight. This catches my eye, I just can't figure out what is so appealing. I wonder what I would think if another member had posted it.... Oh, well. That is what makes this so much fun. Thanks again.

Re: Does this work or is it just a mess?

I think it is a very good attempt of a very difficult situation/subject. Easier if they were larger, slower flapping or gliding birds (geese landing, pelicans riding the wave fronts, etc). I tried the same thing with a flock of small birds (chimney swifts) and found that the fast wing beats are too difficult to represent uniformly among the group making the entire image look off.

For example, in your image some are really sharp (the ones with the wings at the top or bottom of their strokes) while others are really blurry. So my eye is caught between two different impressions - does that make sense?

Good job trying something new. Can't learn new techniques without trying it out first

Thanks, Loupey. Thanks very much for the comments. You are right though, it is important to try new things. I appreciate your positive feedback, however.
