    Crested Caracaras - 3 shots

    A few more from this morning's adventure. I realize I haven't posted many of these birds, and they are actually a nice looking bird. Enjoy:

    are shots 2 and 3 females or a different colour variation?

    They are immature. Once they reach adulthood, they will look like the pair in image 1.

    Beautiful birds.

    Not knowing anything about them, are they scavengers? Bird of opportunity? Their talons look like a cross between a turkey and a hawk. What do they resemble when flying?

    They are members ofd the Falcon family. Body size is comparable to a Black Vulture. I believe they are primarily carrion eaters, but may be hunters as well. In flight, they kind of resemble an oversized Northern Harrier, with white patches on the backs of their wings.

    All the info is correct and I love those caracaras, yet have only seen them flying over once:mad2:

    Beautiful shots and an interesting bird. I had a teacher in high school that wore a toupe like that.....
