Holy Cow! That was one hungry woodpecker(?). That tree must have been chock full of bugs and goodies!

What did that? I know, but do you

That tree was dead already, which is why insects(ants mostlikely) were living in it .That BTW is either the work of atleast 2 or has been worked for a good while.

Yes i know being a Power Lineman this bird gives quite a bit of work every year . They have a nasty habit of choosing the biggest hydro poles around to make nest`s in lol So my guess is a hungry overweight Pileated Woodpecker

Well, most of that is pileated but others feed there also. That tree is beyond dead as it's very punky looking.

The tree looks like an oak, though it may be a maple, and I assure you that it's been dead for years People actually remove dead trees then complain about WP damage on the house ! Hahaha, leave those dead trees for habitat and a food source and they will leave your home alone beside drumming to attract a mate(usually)

Leaving trees like this is a very enviromentally consious choice to make, though that close to a road is not too safe depending on the lean of the tree ;)
