    Re: Coopers Hawk

    Actually that's a harris hawk

A little fact about them for everyone.....

Harris hawks are the only north american hawks(don't know about other areas too well) that hunt in packs at times to better catch their prey.

ooops.. you are correct.. I missed a number in my notes lol. /blush .. appologies all around.

I also did not know that ANY bird of prey hunted in packs.... shows more of their intelligence. You learn something new everyday.

I learned raptors from one of the best at it in the state, so don't sweat a simple mistake(everyone make a few )

Yes, I find that quite fasinating too, but Have never witnessed them doing it. I will someday though

    Beautiful animal!

    Hey Paul,

I've witnessed it! I have it (albeit quite amateurish) on video tape. Three Harris' Hawks , triangulating their prey ( a desert cottontail, or 'lunch' as they're viewed around here). They killed it, but it was too big to carry away, so momma ate a bit, first. They worked it just like the raptors in Jurasic Park

They nested here a number of years ago. Recently, they've been 'negotiating' with the resident Cooper's Hawk about moving back into the area.
