While that close double-spot on the forewing looks more like Pieris brassicae than P.rapae
It's not the same as our P. brassicae
Looks so similar I'd say it wasn't a different species, but given the separation it could be.

Nice pictures, you have to take what you can get ...

The colour is very different on the second shots, less saturated.
So much changes in the exposure and saturation of the colours !
I think the first shots where in evening light?

Without scale it's hard, but from the flower head in the first set I think the "small white" P. rapae if you'd found them over here.
Looks like the mating pair is second generation and they're making the third !

Hey, NPS - I really like your 1st image in the first post. Tough to get these guys sometimes as they can be very flighty and very active at time.

The others are too close/tight for my tastes FWIW.

Thanks Loupey, I know a lot of this is subjective, but isnt the purpose of macro photo work to get in super close and tight on the subject? I understand what your saying regarding more interesting compositions work better in close up, but what is more interesting then the face of the tiny bug you are trying to capture? I sort of consider getting in as close as I do (physically) half the challenge. But please keep in mind I have only been shooting photos (of anything) for about a year or so, I'm as much of a novice as one can get, I take everyones comments very much to heart in the hopes of improving/honing my skills.

Depends on what you are trying to show/accomplish. There are no "right" and "wrong" ways to shoot macro. I think everyone has that inclination when he/she first buys a macro to "see how close this baby can go". But I think that when people do that, other more important aspects of photography get ignored. Composition, lighting, story-telling.

To me, extreme close-ups seem clinical and remind me of textbook images. You know, from Biology class..."here is a proboscis, this is a thorax,..." Nothing wrong with it but lacks a story.

The outdoors is such a wonderful studio. Kind of like having a lavish studio for taking people portraits but then using it to shoot only people's eye(s).

    Just my thoughts.

Loupey, I love your first and last shots. The detail and DOF really work.
