    Butterfly Exhibit

Our local conservatory just kicked off their annual butterfly exhibit.

Too early to get good numbers of any varieties. Not much else going on here (birding has been slow).

    Thanks for looking.

These are stunning Loupey, I really love the DOF on #2.

Did you use extension tubes on these.

Again, amazing work, I'm not worthy!

Thank you! Two of these images are with the 100mm f/2.8L IS lens (no tube) and three are with the 300mm f/4L IS with 36mm extension tube.

Four of these images are with the 430EX II strobe. Can you name them all?

    Re: Butterfly Exhibit

I'll guess that #1 & 2 were with the 100 mm Macro and #4 didn't use the strobe. Love the images. I will be at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix in a couple weeks and I understand they have quite a nice butterfly enclosure. Am hoping to come back with images along these lines, though doubtful they will be as nice!

Still amazing. I wish I could watch you work. I don't know how you use tubes on such a subject. I barely have success with it on still life. LOL!

#1 & #2 were indeed with the 100mm. The rest with the 300mm+36mm.

    But #4 was flashed

Enjoy the Phoenix exhibit and bring back pictures

    Three more recent ones.

This one with the 100mm and 430EXII strobe:

This one with the 300mm + 36mm tube and 430EXII strobe (against a waterfall for separation):

This one with the 300mm + 36mm tube and strobe again (didn't need the tube but I was too lazy to take it off ):

    Re: Butterfly Exhibit

Don't know if it is worth mentioning but all these so far are with my 5DmkII. My flash has a Lumiquest softbox and is mounted on a flash bracket which can pivot 90° for when I go vertical. But having the ability to fine tune the flash position with this bracket is instrumental in getting the light in the right place. Still, it would be nice to have the flash on the right half for some shots. The bracket could be reversed to shoot that way but I haven't done that yet.

For more fun in-flight shots, I'll be using the 50D without the strobe. I typically use the 85mm f/1.8 but I sold it to another forum member so I'll have to think about the lens choice. A toss up between the 100mm macro and the 70-200mm f/2.8. It would be fun if I had the 24mm f/1.4. Perhaps just the 50mm and call it even.

Beautiful work Loupey! In the wild I have gotten my most successful butterfly images using your 300mm with tubes technique. Very grateful to you for introducing that to us here on PR.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

Revisited the conservatory recently. Took my 50D, 100mm macro, and strobe hoping for some really tight close-up portraits.

    Thanks for looking.
