    Broad Tailed Hummingbirds

The hummers were just all over the campground at Rocky Mountain.

I'd never even attempted inflights of hummers before, so I'm pretty happy with my results.

    6. Missed the focus just slightly, drat it. But I love you can see the red throat.

9 I spotted this female hovering around the thorns of the wild roses. I was really confused about why she kept stopping nowhere near flowers... then I figured it out... she was gathering spiderweb for her nest!

10 Too bad the flowers were in front of her. I love that you can see her with the single thread of spider silk in her beak.

so I'm pretty happy with my results.

Wow Cara, you should be happy. These are some outstanding shots.
I'm not familiar with Broad Tail, but looks like you also have Ruby Throats.
Now if you can find the nest.... with eggs..... then after hatching.

    Thanks everyone

    GotRocks... you're making me blush!

These are all broad-tails. The male broad-tail has a red throat. Rubies don't range as far west as the Rockies.

For years I heard that Ruby Throats were the only hummers east of the Mississippi.
We have friends in Georgia that had a Rufous spend a whole year with periodic visits to their backyard.

I guess maybe it's a sign of the times. Cross a border here, cross a border there.

Very nice! Sounds idyllic - mountains, flowers, and hummingbirds flying about...

Great images! Yes indeed the ID is correct. Typically ruby throated in the only hummer east of the mississippi, but many vagrants do show up way up north .

Those are really great pictures. I was out that way a couple of week ago and did not get into the hummingbirds. These are great captures!
