    Re: Black winged kite

This bird is remarkably similar to the Black Shouldered Kite that I have seen here photographed by Eric at Puerto Rico. It is also a pretty common raptor here in Southern Africa occurring throughout the region and further north in Africa. Here is an example of him in our area.
    Lovely captures Carlo!!

Carlo, Very nice images of this Kite. Your Kite looks a lot like the Black-shouldered Kite that I once oberved in California.

    Re: Black winged kite

Ornithologist are currently in a split all species mode these days - apparently based on genetics. I read the following information on the net.

The White-tailed Kite and the Black-shouldered Kite were formerly included with this species but have since been treated as separate species. All these forms or species together form a superspecies.

Some of these are Old World or new world species. They all have gone by various names including: Black-winged Kite, Black-shouldered Kite, White-tailed Kite.
